Test environment is a very important part of testing process. Usually it includes test information, software, networks, necessary test-bed scripts, environment-setup scripts, hardware and different kinds of equipment.
Preparing for web site testing, desktop testing or mobile testing it is essential to plan test environment. It is necessary to make up test equipment purchase list that will contain information about what and how many must be bought for the testing process, unit prices, maintenance and other expenses.
Sometimes software testing company includes some spare parts in the list to be able to proceed testing when some parts of equipment break or go wrong.
Test environment must be similar to the operation environment or user environment of the tested software. It is the most important during performing user acceptance tests and system tests. Unit testing and integration-level testing are generally executed in the development environment.
But often it is hard and expensive to copy operation environment in details. In this case a scaled-down version of the operation environment is used.
To compose testing environment close to the software operation environment you will need to collect some information.
1. Automated test tools that will be needed during testing.
2. Description of user hardware.
3. Description of user software.
4. Network characteristics of the user environment.
5. Special and deprecated equipment that may be needed during mobile testing, desktop testing or web site testing.
