As new IT trends appear every year, and new software development practices are constantly evolving, the field of software testing also adjusts its techniques and approaches to the current requirements of the IT industry. Self-education and self-development are of importance for every specialist, especially ones engaged in software delivery.

There are many helpful books[1] dedicated to software testing and QA activities[2]. Of course, you have read at least a couple of them. But it happens that the majority of these books are dated 10 or even 15 years ago. To stay aware of new QA trends, software testers are more likely to read topic-related articles and other published materials forgetting to keep track of newly published books. Here is the list of the books about software testing published within the last two-three years.

“Dear Evil Tester” by Alan Richardson

Alan Richardson has been engaged in the software field since 1995. He is the author of the books “Java for Testers” and “Automating & Testing a REST API”. Alan conducts online training courses dedicated to web testing, Agile testing[3], and usage of Selenium WebDriver. He is running a blog called Evil Tester. The book bases on the materials published on the blog.

The book consists of three parts. The first one is in a form of a Q&A on the topics of software testing and development. The readers can also find the questions and answers on Alan’s blog. The second part contains the materials that are not published on the blog. The third part includes the essays that show the author’s attitude insights of software testing and his perception of the field. The whole book is full of humor and jokes. The main goal of the book is to change the testers’ vision to their own job and its importance for software delivery. It is a thought-provoking book that makes you think about ordinary things in a totally different way.

“Humans vs Computers” by Gojko Adzic

Gojko Adzic has more than 17-year experience in the IT field. He is a partner in Neuri Consulting LLP. Gojko is the author of the book “Specification by Example” which is the best book of 2012 according to the Jolt Award. He specializes in Agile and Lean methodologies and provides consulting services for improving software delivery.

The book includes a number of stories about the software issues ordinary people faced and how a small bug and wrong decision-making algorithms can cause serious and inevitable consequences. It shows how the software delivery team can easily lose the struggle with time pressure, limited means, lack of domain knowledge, and human faults. The book is called to help people to predict and avoid software issues. It is for everyone who is involved in software development and delivery.

“A Practical Guide to Testing in DevOps” by Katrina Clokie

Katrina Clokie has more than 12-year experience in the IT field. She has skills in software development, test automation, and QA engineering. Katrina is the Managing Director at WeTest Limited in New Zealand and a founder of Testing Trapeze Magazine.

The book outlines the specifics of the testing procedures in the DevOps[4] (Development and Operation) environment. Besides that, the author talks about the future of testing in terms of continuous delivery, AI (Artificial Intelligence), and Machine Learning. Katrina emphasizes the importance of cross-discipline collaboration. Using simple words and numerous case studies, the author clearly explains terminology including “dark launches”, “canary release” and many others. The book with all its innovative ideas and interesting observations is worth reading for every software tester.
