Why is it Hard to Hire Software Testers?

Though working in the field of information technology is prestigious, it appears that there are always fewer programmers and, in particular, experts in manual and automated testing, than required at the labor market. There are many reasons of that.

The Main Reasons of Shortage in Software Testers Are:

  • mobile testing, desktop testing and web site testing are quite difficult activities, not everybody can be good at them;
  • many people know nothing about career opportunities in software testing field;
  • few educational establishments teach how to perform security testing, cross-browser testing, load testing, functional testing and so on, what tools to use, how to work with the tools.

That is why almost every software testing company is looking for people who want to become test engineers. Many recruiters fail to find junior testers because of inflated requirements to the candidates.

A vacancy description should help to select appropriate applicants for a software tester position, but they also mustn’t repel all the candidates. This often refers to junior tester vacancies. The managers shouldn’t forget that a junior tester usually doesn’t have the experience, may not know how to work with the tools and so on. But it doesn’t mean that such a candidate is unsuitable.

Writing requirements for a junior tester position it is more preferable to focus on personal qualities of the candidates rather than on their experience in software testing, command of testing methods, tools and so on.
